South Africa’s Electoral Commission ramps up hiring ahead of 2026 local elections

Government Elections approach, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has opened a broad recruitment drive, advertising 76 positions across all provinces to support election logistics, administration and outreach. The drive combines temporary election contracts, fixed-term appointments and a small number of internships to ensure each local office is staffed for the practical tasks that make voting possible.

Many roles focus on the essential material-handling tasks that keep electoral operations moving. Warehouse picker/packer positions—widely advertised in KwaZulu‑Natal and other provinces—are paid an inclusive rate of R380 per day (subject to statutory deductions). These workers will be responsible for supervised handling, packing and distribution of election materials under the direction of provincial election officers, a role that becomes critical during ballot distribution, polling station setup and post-election stock reconciliation.

Management and coordination posts are also on offer. Area manager positions in municipalities such as Ndwedwe and Cederberg include the daily allowance plus a one-off cellular allowance, reflecting the communication demands of local coordination. Assistant project coordinators, posted in areas like Tokologo and the West Coast, offer a fixed monthly package (around R13,620) and contribute to planning, community engagement and project delivery at municipal level.

The IEC is also recruiting for capacity-building roles through internships. A notable listing is an admin intern to the Provincial Electoral Officer in the Eastern Cape: a 24‑month placement paying R11,067.61 per month, aimed at graduates or entry-level candidates seeking practical public‑sector experience.

Applications are managed through the IEC’s e-recruitment portal; applicants must register to create a profile before applying. Each advert notes a closing date—many fall in late May and early June 2026—so prospective candidates should act quickly. The listings include clear job purposes, locations and contract types, giving applicants sufficient information to choose suitable roles.

This recruitment push reflects the IEC’s logistical preparations for an election that will require thousands of temporary and contract staff nationwide. For job seekers, the campaign presents short-term income opportunities and pathways into public-sector work, while for communities it helps ensure the administrative backbone is in place for a transparent and well-run election. Interested applicants should visit the IEC website, register, and follow application instructions before the advertised closing dates
