South Africa faces a pressing need to create meaningful work opportunities for its young people. Clicks Group’s Youth Employment Programme responds directly to this challenge by offering unemployed South African youth aged 18–29 a structured path into the retail and supply chain sector. With classroom learning and on-the-job training across Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, the programme blends practical experience with recognised certification to build career-ready skills.

Designed specifically for candidates who have completed matric yet remain unemployed, Clicks’ initiative focuses on the frontline role of a Checkout Operator. Over the course of the fixed-term learnership, participants receive hands-on experience in Clicks stores alongside formal instruction, culminating in a NQF Level 2 Checkout Operator occupational qualification. This combination ensures graduates not only gain immediate workplace competence but also hold a credential that improves their employability within the broader retail industry.

A major strength of the programme is its accessibility. As an Employment Equity (EE) position, it aims to widen participation and reach young people who have historically struggled to enter the job market. Applicants must be South African citizens, between 18 and 29, and not enrolled in any other learnership or skills programme—requirements that target those most likely to benefit from direct entry-level workplace training. Clicks also provides support for candidates navigating the application and registration process via a dedicated support team, helping to remove administrative barriers that can prevent motivated individuals from applying.

Beyond the immediate skills of operating a checkout, the programme fosters essential workplace behaviours. Participants learn customer service, cash handling, stock awareness, time management, and teamwork—transferrable skills valuable across retail, logistics and service industries. Interpersonal and communication abilities are emphasised, preparing learners to interact professionally with colleagues and customers. For employers, graduates represent a pool of trainees already acclimatised to retail operations and company culture, reducing the time and cost needed to onboard new staff.

For the participants, the programme offers more than a certificate. It provides a supportive environment to build confidence, establish routines, and develop a positive work history—critical elements in the transition from unemployment to sustained employment. Even for those who do not remain with Clicks long-term, the qualification and experience create stronger prospects when applying to other retailers or service-sector employers.

Clicks’ Youth Employment Programme also aligns with broader social and economic goals. By upskilling young people in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, it helps stimulate local economies, supports household incomes, and addresses youth unemployment trends that disproportionately affect these regions. The company’s investment in human capital demonstrates how private-sector programmes can complement public initiatives to expand workforce readiness.

As the application window closes on 11 August 2026, eligible candidates are encouraged to apply promptly. Prospective applicants should prepare their matric certificate and proof of South African citizenship, ensure they meet the age and unemployment criteria, and reach out to Clicks’ support team if they need assistance completing the registration. For many young people, this programme could be the first step toward a stable career in retail—an opportunity to learn, earn, and build a future.
