Transnet Freight Rail is recruiting Trainee Train Assistants for its Postmasburg depot, offering a practical entry route into South Africa’s vital rail freight industry. This role places trainees alongside experienced train drivers, teaching hands‑on skills in locomotive preparation, shunting and safe train handling across varied consists including airbrake, vacuum, high‑speed, heavy haul and passenger configurations.

Successful candidates will assist with pre‑trip inspections, brake tests and coupling operations, and support communication by checking and operating radios and telemeters. On route they’ll monitor signals, help protect the train during incidents and provide accurate, timely reports of any deviations. Trainees also carry out administrative duties such as completing train journals to ensure correct payroll and operational records.
Applicants must meet minimum entry requirements: Grade 12 (with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science preferred), be at least 21 years old, and meet physical and sensory fitness standards verified through periodic medical surveillance and behavioural safety assessments. Candidates should be at least 1.6 m tall, able to handle heavy objects, and demonstrate psychomotor aptitude assessed via the Vienna Testing System. Functional training culminates in certification to work independently as a Train Assistant.
The role demands practical competencies—locomotive coupling, shunting, basic electrical and diesel knowledge—and softer skills including observation, time management, resilience under stress, and good communication. Familiarity with local depot layouts, train working rules, and safety legislation such as the Health and Safety Act will be beneficial. First preference is given to applicants residing in the Northern Cape; proof of residence is required.
Transnet emphasises safety and integrity: trainees must be prepared for ongoing behavioural safety risk assessments and periodic medical checks, and applicants should be wary of recruitment fraud—Transnet never requests fees. If you don’t hear back within 90 days, consider your application unsuccessful.
