Joining the Front Line: Sasol’s Learner Fire Fighter Programme in Secunda and Sasolburg

Spread the love

Sasol’s Learner Fire Fighter programme offers a rare pathway for local youth to build a technical career while serving their community. Run in Secunda and Sasolburg, the fixed-term learnership combines on-the-job training with structured learning, preparing participants for the physical, mental, and procedural demands of industrial fire protection.

The programme targets candidates aged 18 to 29 who hold a National Senior Certificate with passes in mathematics (or maths literacy), English, and physical/technical science. Applicants must live in the Sasol local communities and hold at least a Code B driver’s licence. Because the role requires resilience under extreme conditions, candidates must pass a fire fighter fitness assessment and a stress-and-fear evaluation covering heights, confined spaces, fire exposure, and cat ladders.

Trainees learn to operate specialised firefighting equipment, respond to process-related emergencies, and apply safety-critical procedures used in large chemical and energy sites. Beyond hands-on firefighting, the learnership develops soft skills such as teamwork, decision-making under pressure, and adherence to strict policies and workflows. Sasol emphasises personal accountability, continuous improvement, and self-awareness—competencies that strengthen employability across the broader engineering and safety sectors.

For many local young people, the programme is more than a job ticket: it’s a route to stable employment, technical certification, and long-term career growth within an established global company. Sasol’s investment in development aims to close skills gaps in the region and widen participation from underrepresented groups, reflecting their commitment to diversity and inclusion. Successful learners emerge better prepared for roles in operations, maintenance, and emergency response—skills that are transferable across industry.

Applicants should watch deadlines carefully—the current listing closes on 19 June 2026—and ensure all documentation is truthful and complete. Sasol warns that they will never request cash payments during recruitment and will deem applications void if supplied information is false. If applicants are not contacted within 60 days after closing, they should assume their application was unsuccessful.

This learnership is a practical entry point for motivated local youth to step into safety-critical roles at a company with a 75-year legacy in chemicals and energy. For those ready to meet the physical and mental demands, it’s an opportunity to train, serve, and grow within a disciplined, safety-first environment.
