Johannesburg, April 21, 2026 – In a heated denial that’s gripping South African football circles, retired police officer Botsotso Moukangwe has categorically rejected allegations of pocketing a R5-million bribe from Kaizer Chiefs legend Bobby Motaung. The claims, surfacing amid ongoing investigations into match-fixing scandals, have sparked outrage and calls for transparency.

Moukangwe, a former high-ranking officer with the Hawks, addressed the media outside his Soweto home yesterday. “These accusations are pure fiction,” he declared, his voice steady despite the flashing cameras. “Bobby Motaung and I have never discussed, let alone transacted, any bribe. I’ve served this country with integrity for 30 years. I won’t let smears tarnish that.”

The controversy erupted last week when whistleblower documents leaked to eNCA implicated Moukangwe in a 2022 PSL bribery ring. Sources allege Motaung, son of Chiefs founder Kaizer, funneled the cash to influence referee decisions favoring Amakhosi. Motaung, now a club executive, has remained silent, but Chiefs issued a terse statement: “We support all legal processes and deny wrongdoing.”

Legal experts weigh in: Advocate Thabo Shongwe told SABC News, “Without concrete evidence like bank records or witnesses, this remains hearsay. Moukangwe’s denial shifts the burden back to accusers.” The Hawks confirmed they’re probing the leaks but urged the public to avoid speculation.

Public reaction is fierce on social media, with #BotsotsoBribe trending on X. Chiefs fans defend Motaung, while rivals cry corruption. Opposition MP Zweli Mkhize demanded a parliamentary inquiry, linking it to broader sport-governance failures post-State Capture.

Moukangwe vows to sue for defamation. “Truth will prevail,” he said. As investigations deepen, this saga underscores South Africa’s battle against graft in sport
