Mokgoloboto, a vibrant village on the outskirts of Tzaneen, has been plunged into mourning following the untimely passing of beloved local barber, Simon Baloyi. Known affectionately as “Bra Simon,” he was more than just a barber—he was a mentor, friend, and community pillar for more than two decades.

Bra Simon’s modest barbershop, nestled on the main road near the taxi rank, was a familiar gathering place for young and old alike. Locals fondly recall how his shop’s laughter and steady hum of clippers served as the unofficial soundtrack of the neighborhood. For many young men, Simon offered not only sharp haircuts but also sage advice about education, respect, and courage in the face of challenges. He was especially known for encouraging out-of-school youth to better themselves, often referring them to apprenticeship opportunities and short courses.

His generosity extended far beyond his skills with the scissors. During December, Simon hosted his annual “free haircut for school kids” campaign, ensuring every child started the new year with confidence. His giving spirit uplifted the less privileged, bringing hope and self-esteem to many families who struggled financially.

The village is deeply shaken by the void left by his death. “He was like a father to us all. Simon listened, counseled, and cared for every client,” said long-time customer Witness Maake. Local businesses have pledged support for his family, with some proposing a memorial fund to keep Simon’s charitable initiatives alive.

As Mokgoloboto prepares for his memorial, tributes and prayers continue to pour in. While his barbershop stands quiet, Simon Baloyi’s legacy of kindness, mentorship, and community service will remain alive in the hearts of Mokgoloboto’s people.
