A 44-year-old man from Mandeni on KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast is still reeling in shock after nearly burying a doll, mistakenly believing it to be the body of his recently “deceased” child.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, was overwhelmed with grief after hearing a harrowing story about his child’s supposed death. In his distraught state, he came into possession of what he thought was his child’s lifeless body wrapped carefully in cloth. The emotional weight of the situation clouded his judgment, leading him to prepare for a burial.

It was only during the final moments, when he attempted to lower the “body” into the ground, that the man realized something was amiss. On closer inspection, he discovered that rather than a child, the object was a lifelike doll. The revelation left him shaken, struggling to reconcile the intense emotions he had just experienced with the confusing and painful reality.

Community members expressed sympathy for the man, praising his honesty in sharing the traumatic experience. Many highlighted the challenges surrounding mental health and grief, especially in rural areas where access to support services is limited. Experts emphasize the importance of mental health resources and psychosocial counseling to help individuals cope with trauma and loss effectively.

This incident draws attention to the deep impacts of misinformation and emotional vulnerability. It serves as a critical reminder for communities to come together in support and understanding, ensuring that those experiencing trauma receive the care and compassion they need. The man continues to seek help to process the ordeal and return to a place of peace.
