The tragic murder of 30-year-old Loveness Magabe has deeply shocked South Africa and highlighted the urgent need to confront gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in the country. Loveness was last seen on July 26, 2025, when she went to meet Helder Isidro, 36, a man she met on a dating app. Originally, they planned to meet at a lodge in Eersterust, east of Pretoria, but Isidro allegedly arranged for Loveness to be dropped off at his residence instead. Before meeting him, Loveness sent a message to a friend expressing unease about the location, calling it “dodgy” and sharing her GPS coordinates as a safety measure.

When Loveness did not return home the next day, her friend reported her missing. Following an intensive investigation, police discovered her body buried in a shallow grave at Isidro’s home on July 31. Isidro was arrested on August 4 at his grandmother’s residence in Limpopo. He faces charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice, and is also charged with rape. He has abandoned his bail application, and the case has been postponed for further investigation.

This tragic case underscores the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence in South Africa, despite government efforts under the National Strategic Plan on GBVF to tackle this scourge. It highlights the dangers women face, even from those they meet through trusted platforms like dating apps. South Africa continues to grapple with systemic issues driving violence against women, demanding unified, urgent action from society and government to ensure safety, justice, and comprehensive support for survivors. The nation mourns Loveness Magabe, a stark reminder of the work still needed to end femicide and GBV in the country
