A disturbing update was issued by 1KZNTV News on Thursday about the disruption that took place at Sobantu School. This meant that the scheduled Matric Examinations got disrupted with learners demonstrating over-service delivery. In accordance with the report, the learners decided to riot in protest over electricity and water. It was alleged in the report that the services were disconnected more than a year ago.

This is a sad development for the learners who are supposed to be focusing on their examinations. It was claimed that the school has been without water and electricity for more than a year. It is a setback not to have such services for learners as these are their basic needs.

There is a greater need for the KwaZulu Natal Education Department to intervene and ensure that everything gets rectified on time. It is hard to imagine how the learners have been going about their learning without having these services. Instead of focusing on their studies, the learners are made to worry over service delivery. This will have a negative impact on the overall performance of the learners.

The School Governing Body of the school should account for why the school has not been having access to basic services for more than a year as claimed in the report. It is devastating how the school has been running for months and not taking any action to rectify the issue.

The Education Department in KwaZulu-Natal has a duty of ensuring that schools are properly managed, but this action by the learners is proof that the department has not played its part. There is a need for the situation at Sobantu High School to be addressed urgently so that the learners can manage to shift their focus to studies.
