Cape Town – In a viral video that’s lighting up social media, a man clad in an ANC T-shirt was filmed handing out crisp R100 notes to passengers on a packed MyCiTi bus, as chants of “Viva ANC, viva!” echoed through the vehicle. The clip, shared widely on TikTok and Twitter, has ignited fierce debate: act of kindness or blatant vote-buying ahead of local elections?

The footage shows the man, smiling broadly, slipping bills into grateful hands while passengers cheer and pump fists. “Take it, it’s for you!” he says, as one woman exclaims, “God bless ANC!” The bus, rumbling through Cape Town’s bustling streets, becomes an impromptu rally. But not everyone is convinced. Online sleuths question if it’s staged propaganda, with comments flooding in: “R100 won’t fix load shedding!” and “Real change comes from the heart, not handouts.”

This isn’t isolated. South Africa’s streets have seen similar stunts from various parties, blurring lines between generosity and graft. ANC critics point to past scandals, urging vigilance. Yet, for strapped commuters facing rising fuel and food prices, the gesture hits home – a fleeting win in tough times.

From a faith perspective, Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 19:17: “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord.” True compassion builds communities, not just cheers. As elections loom, let’s demand leaders who serve selflessly, not with strings attached.
