Sergeant Lauwrence Dumisani Mtshweni, a dedicated member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) with 18 years of service, was tragically killed in the early hours of Saturday, August 9, 2025, while responding to a business burglary in Schoemansdal, Mpumalanga. The incident occurred around 02:45 when Mtshweni and fellow officers were assessing the crime scene and were suddenly attacked by about 10 gunmen. He sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body and, despite being rushed to the hospital, sadly passed away.
The provincial Acting Police Commissioner, Major General Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi, has condemned the attack and launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspects involved. With a significant police presence and cooperation from community leaders, the search for the suspects is underway. The National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, confirmed the arrest of one suspect and visited Mtshweni’s family to offer condolences. A R150,000 reward has been offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
