Johannesburg, South Africa – Tension gripped the heart of Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD) this afternoon as yet another shooting left two people wounded at the busy intersection of President and Polly Streets. Emergency services rushed to the scene around 4:00 PM SAST, where gunfire erupted amid Friday evening rush hour traffic.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene: “I heard three or four loud bangs, then people screaming and running everywhere,” said Thabo Mokoena, a street vendor nearby. “Two men fell to the ground; one was clutching his leg, the other his arm. It happened so fast.” Paramedics from ER24 and Johannesburg EMS stabilized the victims on-site before transporting them to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Both are in stable condition, according to preliminary reports, with no fatalities confirmed.

Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele confirmed the incident, stating, “Gauteng Provincial Police are investigating a shooting involving two adult males. Motive is unknown at this stage, but no arrests have been made. The area is cordoned off for forensics.” Crime scene tape fluttered as SAPS officers combed the intersection, littered with shell casings and abandoned vehicles.

This marks the latest in a string of violent incidents plaguing JHB CBD, following a tavern shooting last week that claimed three lives. Business owners lament the impact on foot traffic and safety. “We’re scared to open shops now,” said Fatima Khan, a local retailer. Community leaders call for increased patrols and visible policing to restore calm.

As investigations continue, residents urge vigilance. Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero’s office promised swift action via social media, emphasizing partnerships with private security. The city that never sleeps now grapples with restless nights
