Cape Town, April 29, 2026 – A shocking turn of events unfolded today when a 42-year-old mother was arrested at her husband’s funeral service in Khayelitsha, accused of plotting his murder for insurance money.

Police spokesperson Captain Lungelo Dlamini confirmed the arrest of Nomonde Zuma, who was detained peacefully amid mourners at the community hall on Spine Road. Zuma, a local homemaker and part-time vendor, faces charges of murder, fraud, and conspiracy. Authorities allege she orchestrated her husband, Thabo Zuma’s, death last month to claim a R500,000 life insurance payout.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), investigations began after an anonymous tip led detectives to suspicious financial records. Thabo, 45, a construction worker, died from what was initially ruled a heart attack. A second autopsy, ordered amid red flags like recent policy changes and witness statements, revealed traces of a common poison in his system—details still under forensic review.

“New evidence points to deliberate actions,” Dlamini stated during a briefing. “We acted swiftly to prevent further harm.” Two accomplices, including a distant relative, are also in custody.

Neighbors described the couple as unremarkable, with Thabo supporting their three children. “She seemed devastated,” said neighbor Sipho Mthembu. “This is heartbreaking for the kids.”

The funeral proceeded under heavy police presence, with Zuma led away in handcuffs as hymns echoed. Family members expressed shock, urging privacy.

This case highlights rising insurance fraud concerns in South Africa, where SAPS reported a 15% uptick in related probes last year. Zuma is expected in court tomorrow. The investigation continues
