a harrowing escalation of violence, at least 169 people, including women, children, and the elderly, were killed when unidentified insurgents raided Abiemnom County in South Sudan’s remote Ruweng Administrative Area on Sunday. Local information minister James Monyluak confirmed the devastating toll, noting 90 civilians among the dead alongside 79 government soldiers, with the attack lasting three to four hours before forces regained control.

The assault, launched by armed youths from neighboring Mayom County in Unity State, has been condemned as a “heinous act” and potential genocide by officials, who buried all bodies in a mass grave on Monday. Fifty others suffered injuries, and the death count may rise as searches continue, according to health minister Elizabeth Achol. Among the fallen was the county commissioner and an executive director, underscoring the targeting of local leadership.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) expressed alarm, reporting 23 initial injuries and over 1,000 civilians fleeing to their base for shelter. Peacekeepers are providing emergency aid amid fears of broader instability, as this raid fuels tensions between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those linked to opposition leader Riek Machar.

This tragedy revives nightmares of South Sudan’s 2013-2018 civil war, which claimed nearly 400,000 lives despite a fragile 2018 peace deal. Intermittent clashes over power-sharing persist, threatening hard-won calm. Rights groups urge swift justice, while the government demands Unity State authorities hand over perpetrators.

As South Sudan grapples with this bloodshed, international calls grow for renewed dialogue to avert full-scale conflict. “Such slaughter is intolerable,” Monyluak declared, echoing a nation’s grief. The world watches, hoping for intervention before more villages fall
