a shocking display of state violence, Professor Lovemore Madhuku, fiery leader of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), was savagely assaulted by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) at his offices along Herbert Chitepo Avenue in Harare this morning. The attack occurred during a routine meeting, leaving Madhuku and several colleagues injured and in need of urgent medical care.

Eyewitnesses report that heavily armed officers stormed the NCA premises around 10 AM, rounding up participants without warning. Madhuku, a renowned constitutional lawyer and longtime pro-democracy activist, suffered severe beatings, with reports of baton strikes and kicks targeting his head and torso. NCA spokesperson Madock Chivasa confirmed: “Police rounded up and attacked our members, including our leader. He has been badly injured.” Madhuku was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he is stable but under observation for possible fractures and internal injuries.

This brazen assault comes amid escalating tensions over President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s controversial Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, which critics like the NCA argue paves the way for tenure extension without public referendum. The NCA has been vocal in mobilizing citizens against the bill, viewing it as a democratic betrayal. Recent incidents, including abductions of NCA members Naboth Sirora and Innocent Taruona last week, suggest a pattern of intimidation by state security forces.

Madhuku, no stranger to brutality—having been beaten near death in 2004—vowed resilience post-attack via social media allies: “Violence won’t silence the people’s demand for a people-driven constitution.” Human rights groups condemned the ZRP action as unwarranted suppression of civic space.

Zimbabwe’s opposition and civil society now brace for more clashes as anti-amendment protests loom. The international community watches closely, with calls for probes into police excesses growing louder. In a nation weary of authoritarian tactics, Madhuku’s bloodied stand reignites the fight for constitutional supremacy. Will Zanu PF’s iron fist crush the people’s will, or fuel a democratic resurgence
