SAPS Railway Police at Joburg Park Station Accused of Extorting Undocumented Migrants

Johannesburg, 24 February 2026 – Shocking allegations have surfaced claiming that South African Police Service (SAPS) officers stationed at Johannesburg Park Station are demanding bribes from undocumented foreign nationals in exchange for their release. Eyewitness accounts and anonymous tips paint a picture of systemic abuse targeting vulnerable migrants passing through one of the city’s busiest transport hubs.

Sources close to the matter allege that Railway Police officers single out individuals without proper documentation during routine checks. Victims report being detained in holding areas, where demands for cash payments—ranging from R500 to R2,000—are made quietly to avoid scrutiny. “They say, ‘Pay up or face deportation,'” one migrant from Zimbabwe shared anonymously, fearing reprisals. “It’s not justice; it’s a shakedown.”

Park Station, a key gateway for commuters and cross-border travelers, has long been a hotspot for crime and enforcement operations. SAPS has intensified patrols amid rising complaints of illegal immigration and petty crime. However, these bribery claims threaten to undermine public trust in the force. Civil rights group Lawyers for Human Rights condemned the reports, calling for an urgent independent probe. “Extortion erodes the rule of law and preys on the desperate,” spokesperson Nomfundo Ndlovu stated.

SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe responded: “We take corruption seriously. Any verified complaints will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).” No arrests have been confirmed yet, but social media is ablaze with similar stories, amplified on platforms like TikTok and X.

This scandal raises broader questions about border enforcement ethics in a nation grappling with xenophobia and migration pressures. Will SAPS root out the rot, or will it fester? Justice demands swift action
