uMshwathi Municipality is inviting applications for its external bursary programme for the 2026 academic year, aimed at community members who are studying or wish to study at a public tertiary institution in South Africa.

 

Eligible applicants

Must have a CAO acknowledgement letter or proof of registration/acceptance from a reputable South African tertiary institution.

 

Must have a Senior Certificate (Matric), statement of results or NSC/matric report (June/September 2025), and reside within the jurisdiction of uMshwathi Municipality with proof of residence.

 

Applicants must submit a certified copy of their identity document and complete the prescribed external bursary application form in full.

 

Fields of study

Studies must be for first undergraduate degrees in scarce and critical skills fields, which include: Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Agricultural Science, Public Health Management, Accounting/Finance/Commerce, and Actuarial Science.

 

Only these specified fields will be considered, and students must study on a full‑time basis.

 

Preference is generally given to high‑performing learners who demonstrate financial need and academic potential.

 

Bursary value and conditions

The municipality intends to cover full tuition fees per annum per learner, which may include registration fees, tuition, prescribed books and a laptop where needed, subject to availability of funding.

 

The bursary is renewable annually depending on academic performance and continued financial need, and a bursary agreement must be signed.

 

Application process

Application forms and more information are obtainable from the Human Resources Section from Ms Gail Hogan at the municipal offices in New Hanover or via the municipal website and ward councillors’ offices.

 

Completed applications and supporting documents must be submitted to the Municipal Manager, uMshwathi Municipality, by Friday, 30 January 2026, and late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
