The horrific accident which took place in Pongolo in the province of Kwazulu Natal has left many south Africans devastated. Twenty-one souls were lost in that accident, of which 18 of the victims were primary school pupils. The truck was trying to overtake the other truck on the narrow road, the oncoming bakkie which was loaded with the school kids had a very slim chance of avoiding that fatal collision, the truck driver had since handed himself to the police after he initially ran away.

According to other sources, the truck driver had claimed that he was running away from the road police who were chasing him after he led the pack of the truck convoy which blocked the road. The outraged residents of Pongolo had blocked the trucks that are passing by their township to Richards Bay as a demonstration of their anger.

One woman had lost three of her children in that horrific accident, this is the saddest thing that could have happened to her, no amount of condolences will keep her stronger at this point in time. The social media users seem to have run out of consolidations as they just saying “May their Souls Rest In Peace”.This is a devastating blow to the family, friends of the victims and the country as a whole.

Truck drivers and their employers can do better in minimizing the fatal accidents that involve their vehicles. It is the sole responsibility of the motorists to make sure that they try as hard as they can to avoid unnecessary accidents which kill innocent people.

Some of the truck companies ate overworking the employees as they scale their salaries based on the number of loads the driver has delivered. The desperate drivers would try their level best to reach the targets set out by the exploitative employers.

The lawa abiding motorists and the innocent pedestrians are in return paying a heavy price for the people who puts profits before human life.
