A devastating accident on South Africa’s notorious N6 highway has claimed the lives of an entire family after a reckless Zimbabwean driver ploughed into their Volkswagen Polo. The horrific collision, which occurred near Queenstown in the Eastern Cape around 6 PM yesterday, left emergency responders stunned by the wreckage.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as a “nightmare.” The Zimbabwean national, believed to be in his late 30s and driving a battered Toyota pickup overloaded with goods, veered into oncoming traffic without warning. His vehicle smashed head-on into the Polo carrying a mother, father, and their two young children—aged 8 and 10—returning from a weekend visit to family in East London.
“All four occupants of the Polo died instantly,” confirmed Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Thulani Sobekwa. “The impact ignited a fierce blaze, trapping the victims inside.” Firefighters battled flames for over an hour, but it was too late. The driver of the Toyota survived with serious injuries and is under police guard in hospital, facing charges of culpable homicide, reckless driving, and driving without a valid licence.
Preliminary investigations point to speeding and possible fatigue as factors. The N6, a vital artery linking Gauteng to the Eastern Cape, has seen a spike in fatal crashes this year, with over 150 deaths reported. “This is a wake-up call,” said Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Connie Mokonesi. “Foreign drivers must adhere to our laws—no exceptions.”
The community is reeling. A candlelight vigil is planned tonight in Queenstown, where the family was well-known. “They were the heart of our church group,” said local pastor Miriam Ndlovu. “Pray for justice and safer roads.”
As investigations continue, authorities urge drivers: Slow down, stay alert, and respect the road. One reckless choice stole four precious lives
