Johannesburg, March 9, 2026 – In a stunning victory for law enforcement, South African Police Service (SAPS) officers at OR Tambo International Airport intercepted a massive drug haul valued at R2.8 million, dealing a severe blow to international smuggling networks.
The operation unfolded late Sunday night when alert members of the SAPS Airport Unit, acting on intelligence from the Hawks, targeted a suspicious traveler arriving from São Paulo, Brazil. A routine customs check escalated into a full search after sniffer dogs alerted to concealed packages in the suspect’s luggage. Officers uncovered 15 kilograms of cocaine, expertly wrapped in vacuum-sealed parcels and hidden within false compartments of suitcases.
“We commend the vigilance of our officers and the seamless collaboration with international partners,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Philani Mbatha, spokesperson for the Hawks. “This seizure underscores OR Tambo’s role as a frontline in the war against drug trafficking, protecting our communities from the scourge of narcotics.”
The 32-year-old Brazilian national was arrested on the spot and charged with possession and trafficking of illegal substances under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act. He appeared briefly in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning, where bail was denied. Investigations reveal links to a larger syndicate operating between South America and southern Africa, with potential accomplices still under surveillance.
This bust follows a string of successes at the airport, including a R5 million heroin seizure last month. SAPS Commissioner Fannie Masemola hailed it as proof of intensified border security amid rising drug inflows. Community leaders urge continued investment in anti-trafficking tech and youth programs to curb demand.
As South Africa grapples with drug-related crime, this operation signals hope. Stay tuned for updates on aagvgu.co.za
