Johannesburg, March 5, 2026 – In a landmark ruling, the Johannesburg High Court has sentenced former African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament Vincent Smith to seven years’ direct imprisonment. The verdict stems from a plea and sentence agreement with the state, marking a significant blow to political figures entangled in graft scandals.

Smith, 62, once a prominent ANC stalwart and parliamentary chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance, appeared emotional in the dock as Judge Denise Fisher delivered the sentence. He pleaded guilty last month to charges of corruption and fraud linked to Bosasa, a facilities management company at the center of South Africa’s state capture saga. Between 2013 and 2018, Smith accepted over R800,000 in bribes, including cash payments, school fees for his children, and lavish security upgrades to his Johannesburg home—all funneled through Bosasa executive Angelo Agrizzi.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) hailed the agreement as a “step towards accountability.” Spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga noted, “This plea underscores our commitment to rooting out corruption in public office.” Smith’s defense argued for leniency, citing his first-time offender status and community service, but the court prioritized deterrence amid widespread public outrage over elite impunity.

The sentencing revives painful memories of the Zondo Commission, which exposed Bosasa’s web of influence peddling across government. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula distanced the party, stating, “We welcome justice served and continue our renewal drive.” Critics, however, decry it as too light, demanding asset forfeiture.

As South Africa grapples with economic woes, Smith’s downfall serves as a stark reminder: no one is above the law. Will this deter future graft, or is it merely a drop in the ocean? Stay tuned to aagvgu.co.za for updates
