In a heartbreaking incident, five children from the same family have perished in a devastating house fire in Ballito, on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast, early this morning.

The blaze erupted around 5am in a residential home near Shaka’s Head, engulfing the structure in flames before emergency services arrived. The victims, siblings aged between 1 and 19 years old, were trapped in a bedroom secured by burglar guards that prevented escape despite desperate cries for help from the 19-year-old daughter. Heart-wrenching accounts from the scene reveal the father awoke to screams but could not break through the locked barriers in time.

Miraculously, the mother heroically rescued a 2-year-old child, and both parents escaped with burns; they are receiving hospital treatment alongside the survivor. Community members rushed to the site after a whistle alert, battling the fire with whatever means available, but were unable to save the others. “We tried everything, but the structure trapped them,” a local leader recounted through an interpreter.

KwaDukuza Fire Services, SAPS, and Marshall Security responded swiftly, with forensic teams now investigating the cause—possibly an electrical fault or unknown ignition near the door, as no candles or open flames were reported. The family had been watching soccer late into the night, unaware of the looming tragedy.

Government officials, including the MEC for Human Settlements, pledged immediate aid: groceries, Home Affairs documentation, counseling from social workers, and health support. The remains will be buried in the Eastern Cape, with private sector mobilization underway.

This loss has shattered the Ballito community, prompting calls for better fire safety in informal homes. Investigations continue as authorities seek closure for the grieving relatives.
