Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of Zimbabwe’s late President Robert Mugabe, was detained by South African police on Thursday following a shooting at his upscale Johannesburg residence. Authorities rushed to the Hyde Park property after reports of gunfire, where an employee—reportedly a 23-year-old gardener or security guard—sustained critical gunshot wounds during what appears to have been a dispute.

Eyewitnesses and local media captured Bellarmine, in his late twenties, handcuffed in the driveway as officers searched the scene for a weapon. He was taken into custody alongside another man for questioning in connection with an attempted murder investigation, though police have not officially named suspects or confirmed charges. The victim remains hospitalized in critical condition, with the motive still under probe, according to spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

This incident casts a long shadow over the Mugabe legacy. Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years until his 2017 ouster and death in 2019, left behind a family often entangled in controversy. Bellarmine, born to Mugabe’s second wife Grace, has largely stayed out of the spotlight but now faces scrutiny in South Africa’s high-crime landscape, where affluent northern suburbs like Hyde Park are no strangers to such dramas.

South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) first broke the story, amplifying regional headlines from eNCA to international outlets like BBC and AP. As investigations unfold, questions swirl: Was it self-defense, a heated argument gone wrong, or something more sinister? For Zimbabweans and South Africans alike, the arrest evokes painful memories of power, privilege, and impunity.

In Cape Town and beyond, this breaking news stirs debates on cross-border accountability. Will justice prevail, or will Mugabe’s name shield his son? Updates are expected as police delve deeper
