BENONI, Gauteng – A modest Chinese retail store in Benoni turned into a battlefield of desperation on Friday when over 2000 jobless South Africans stormed the premises, clutching CVs for just 30 advertised positions. The viral job posting on social media promised entry-level roles in retail, stocking, and customer service, sparking a stampede that overwhelmed the small shop on Snake Road.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of pandemonium: queues snaking around the block from dawn, with hundreds turned away as the store locked its doors by midday. “I arrived at 5 AM with my matric certificate and skills from a learnership, but by 8 AM, it was a sea of people,” said Thabo Mokoena, 28, a former factory worker from Daveyton. “Unemployment is killing us – R350 grant isn’t enough.”

The shop owner, Mr. Li Wei, who runs the importer of affordable clothing and electronics, confirmed the ad was genuine. “We need 30 workers for expansion. Didn’t expect this crowd,” he told reporters amid shattered expectations. Local police intervened to manage the crowd, preventing injuries in the crush.

This frenzy underscores South Africa’s dire job crisis, with youth unemployment at 45% per Stats SA’s latest figures. Benoni, a bustling East Rand hub, mirrors national struggles where viral posts ignite hope amid 33% overall joblessness. Community leaders like Pastor Elena Nkosi urged calm: “Pray and upskill – God opens doors, but preparation is key. Proverbs 16:3: Commit your work to the Lord.”

Social media exploded with videos of the melee, drawing comparisons to past job riots. As aspirants disperse empty-handed, calls grow for more learnerships and SME hiring incentives
