Police have announced a reward of R300,000 for information leading to the arrest of suspects responsible for the murders of three police officers in two separate shootings within 24 hours. The tragic incidents have sent shockwaves through law enforcement circles and the wider community, highlighting the growing dangers faced by officers on duty.

The first shooting occurred on August 8, 2025, when two police officers from Florida Police Station were killed while escorting an awaiting trial prisoner, Jabulani Moyo, from Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court back to prison. Moyo used a stolen police firearm to shoot the officers and then escaped, hijacking the police vehicle. The vehicle was later found abandoned, but Moyo remains at large. This incident prompted a R150,000 reward for information on Moyo’s whereabouts.

Less than 24 hours later, Sergeant Lawrence Dumisani Mtshweni (47), who was responding to a burglary in progress in Mpumalanga, was ambushed and fatally shot by about ten armed suspects. This second case also carries a R150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola condemned the attacks, emphasizing that the country cannot allow criminals to declare war on the state’s authority. He urged all police officers to remain vigilant, act proportionally against threats, and ensure they have the necessary tools to protect themselves and the public.

The police investigations are ongoing, aided by various units including the Hawks and crime intelligence, with a strong call to the public to come forward with any tips. The rewards underline the urgency and seriousness with which the police are pursuing justice for the slain officers and maintaining law and order in the country.
