Durban, KZN – April 7, 2026 – A self-proclaimed community protector identifying only as “Gumede” has sparked controversy by launching solo efforts to remove undocumented foreigners from townships across KwaZulu-Natal. Videos circulating on social media show the man confronting individuals he claims are illegally in the country, urging them to leave amid rising tensions over jobs and resources.

In a viral clip from uMlazi, Gumede is seen approaching a group at a street corner, demanding proof of residency. “This is our land; go back where you came from,” he declares, echoing frustrations voiced by many locals amid South Africa’s ongoing immigration debates. The footage, shared widely on TikTok and Twitter, has garnered over 100,000 views in hours, with supporters hailing him as a hero filling a policing void.

Gumede insists he operates independently, unaffiliated with groups like the Patriotic Alliance or any political party. “I’m just a son of the soil doing what the government won’t,” he told reporters via a brief video statement. His actions follow recent protests in Durban over alleged foreign nationals dominating informal trading spots, displacing South African vendors.

Critics, including human rights advocates from Lawyers for Human Rights, warn of dangers. “Vigilantism undermines the rule of law and risks violence,” said spokesperson Nomfundo Ngcobo. KZN police have urged calm, stating immigration enforcement is their mandate. No arrests have been made, but officials are monitoring Gumede’s activities.

Residents remain divided. Township elder Sipho Mkhize praised the initiative: “We’ve lost too many opportunities to outsiders.” Others fear escalation.
