Tel Aviv, Israel – In a dramatic escalation of Middle East tensions, an Iranian ballistic missile struck near a U.S.-supplied Patriot air defense system in a bustling residential neighborhood of central Tel Aviv late Tuesday night. The attack, amid a barrage of over 180 projectiles launched by Iran, shattered the fragile calm in Israel’s economic heartland, sending shockwaves through global markets.

Eyewitnesses described a night of chaos as air raid sirens wailed across the city. “The sky lit up like fireworks, but the boom shook our apartment building,” said Miriam Levy, a resident of the Yad Eliyahu district where the missile landed just 200 meters from the Patriot battery. Israeli officials confirmed the interceptors downed most incoming threats, but shrapnel from the strike damaged homes, cars, and a local synagogue, injuring five civilians with minor wounds.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported the missile was part of Iran’s “True Promise 3” operation, retaliating against alleged Israeli strikes on its military sites. “This was a precise attempt to overwhelm our defenses and hit strategic assets,” IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin stated. No fatalities were reported, but the proximity to civilian areas raised alarms about Iran’s targeting tactics.

U.S. officials condemned the assault, with the State Department praising the Patriot system’s effectiveness. “It saved countless lives,” said spokesperson Matthew Miller. In Tehran, state media hailed the strike as a “successful penetration” of Israel’s Iron Dome.

The assault has spiked oil prices by 5%, impacting economies worldwide—including South Africa’s import-dependent energy sector. Analysts warn of prolonged volatility as Israel vows a forceful response. For residents like Levy, the fear lingers: “We pray for peace, but tonight felt like war at our doorstep.”
