Roodepoort, Gauteng – March 8, 2026 – In a shocking incident that has outraged parents and communities across Johannesburg’s West Rand, a young learner from a local primary school in Roodepoort was violently assaulted by scholar transport operator known only as “Magolide.” The attack, which occurred late Friday afternoon near the Florida Road area, has reignited fears over the safety of children relying on unregulated taxi services.

Eyewitnesses report that the 12-year-old victim, whose identity is protected for privacy, was boarding Magolide’s battered silver Toyota Quantum minibus after school when an argument erupted over payment. In a fit of rage, the operator allegedly dragged the boy from the vehicle and beat him mercilessly with a metal rod, leaving him with severe bruises, a fractured arm, and deep lacerations requiring hospitalization at Leratong Hospital.

This is not Magolide’s first brush with infamy. Residents in Roodepoort’s Extension 5 and surrounding townships have long whispered about his predatory behavior, accusing him of dating and molesting underage girls ferried in his transport. “He’s a monster preying on vulnerable kids,” said one mother, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We’ve reported him multiple times to the Scholar Transport Directorate, but nothing happens.”

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chaba confirmed the incident, vowing a full investigation. “No child should endure such brutality. Magolide’s permit has been suspended pending police charges,” Chaba stated. Roodepoort SAPS has opened cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and is probing prior molestation claims.

Community leaders are calling for stricter vetting of transport operators and CCTV mandates on scholar taxis. Parents are urged to report suspicious drivers via the Childline hotline (08000 55 555).

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for safer school commutes. Will authorities finally act before another child suffers?
