In a case that continues to grip the Vaal community, 22-year-old Ayanda Dludla returned to the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court today for the tragic scholar transport crash that claimed 14 young lives. The hearing marks a key development two months after the January 19 accident on the R553 Golden Highway, where Dludla’s minibus taxi collided head-on with a side-tipper truck during an alleged overtaking maneuver.

The courtroom was tense, filled with grieving families from four affected schools, community leaders, and supporters seeking justice for the victims—mostly primary and secondary pupils en route to classes. Dludla, who was hospitalized post-crash before his arrest, faces severe charges: 14 counts of murder (upgraded from culpable homicide), three counts of attempted murder for injured survivors, driving without a valid Professional Driving Permit (expired last year), and operating an unlicensed vehicle. Prosecutors argue the incident involved reckless actions, bolstered by witness statements and forensic evidence, while the state previously noted he abandoned his initial bail bid in January.

Today’s proceedings focused on procedural updates ahead of further investigations into the notorious R553 stretch, known for reckless driving. Dludla, represented by Legal Aid, remained composed but offered no comment as the case was addressed. The matter, postponed from his last appearance, advances toward a potential trial amid calls for stricter scholar transport regulations.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane and Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube previously highlighted driver accountability as key to preventing such horrors, with memorials honoring the lost children. Families like those of the 12 pupils who died on-site and two more in hospital demand closure, vowing to attend every hearing. As South Africa reflects on road safety, this courtroom battle underscores the profound cost of negligence—shattering futures in an instant
