Zozibini Tunzi bio, life story, age and achievements

Spread the love

Zozibini “Zozi” Tunzi, born on September 18, 1993, in the rural village of Tsolo, Eastern Cape, South Africa, rose from humble beginnings to become a beacon of beauty, intellect, and empowerment. Raised in nearby Sidwadweni by educator parents Philiswa Nadopu and Lungisa Tunzi, alongside two sisters, Zozi grew up in a nurturing home that valued education and resilience. Her journey reflects the spirit of many South African women—grounded yet ambitious, blending tradition with modern ambition.

Educated at Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, Zozi earned a National Diploma and later a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations Management by 2018. Before her pageant fame, she interned at Ogilvy Cape Town, honing skills in communications while modeling part-time. Fears of heights and holes aside, her love for umngqusho—a samp and bean dish paired with beef stew—kept her connected to her Xhosa roots. These early years shaped her advocacy for gender equality, notably through the UN’s #HeForShe campaign, where she challenged men to end gender-based violence.

Pageant Triumph and Historic Reign

Zozi’s breakthrough came in 2019. After placing in Miss Mamelodi Sundowns (2015) and Miss South Africa’s Top 26 (2017), she claimed Miss South Africa on August 9—Women’s Day—edging out finalists with her natural hair, eloquence, and call for self-love. Just 122 days later, on December 8 in Atlanta, she became Miss Universe 2019, the third South African winner and first Black South African to do so. Her reign, extended by COVID-19 to 525 days, took her to Indonesia, the US, and home soil, amplifying voices on climate change and women’s rights. She crowned Mexico’s Andrea Meza in 2021.

Career Evolution and Personal Milestones

Post-pageant, Zozi transitioned to acting, debuting as Efe in The Woman King (2022) alongside Viola Davis, and starring as Naomi in Bad Influencer (2025). In 2024, she collaborated with Foschini on the ‘A Season of Living’ collection, blending summer dresses and accessories with her vibrant style. Her poise during the #HandsOffZozi movement underscored her stardom.

In personal life, Zozi married Luthando Bolowana on March 22, 2025, in Paarl, Western Cape, followed by a traditional ceremony on March 29 in Sidwadweni. Now based in Cape Town’s Gardens, she balances family, advocacy, and career, inspiring a new generation. At 32, Zozi Bolowana (née Tunzi) embodies unapologetic Black excellence
