Cape Town, 20 February 2026 – In a landmark ruling, the Constitutional Court has dismissed the appeal by Prince Simakade and other challengers, solidifying His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s position as the legitimate heir to the AmaZulu throne.
The apex court refused to hear the bid against the Supreme Court of Appeal’s (SCA) October 2025 judgment, which upheld President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 2022 recognition of King Misuzulu. This final decision ends years of legal wrangling following the passing of King Goodwill Zwelithini in 2021, quelling disputes over succession within the Zulu royal family.
The SCA had previously confirmed that King Misuzulu met traditional criteria, including endorsement by the late queen regent and key royal structures. Ramaphosa’s certificate of recognition, a pivotal step under the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act, now stands unchallenged.
Zulu traditionalists and supporters hailed the verdict as a victory for cultural continuity. “This affirms the will of our ancestors and unites the nation under rightful leadership,” said a spokesperson for the Ingonyama Trust, which oversees vast Zulu lands.
Critics, including Prince Simakade’s faction, argued procedural flaws in the selection process, but the ConCourt found no basis for intervention. The ruling underscores the judiciary’s deference to customary law while safeguarding constitutional principles.
As South Africa navigates traditional leadership amid modern governance, King Misuzulu’s unchallenged reign promises stability for KwaZulu-Natal’s 12 million Zulu subjects. Royal ceremonies to mark the occasion are anticipated soon.
This development reinforces Ramaphosa’s role in resolving monarchical disputes, boosting ANC ties with traditional leaders ahead of elections.
