Johannesburg, February 13, 2026 – President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a stern condemnation of escalating violence against foreign nationals in South Africa, urging citizens to uphold the nation’s democratic values by ensuring equal access to essential public services.

In a televised address from the Union Buildings late Thursday, Ramaphosa addressed recent incidents of xenophobic attacks in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, where mobs have targeted immigrants, blocking them from schools, clinics, and spaza shops. “No South African has the right to deny another human being – foreign or local – access to education, healthcare, or basic services,” he declared. “This violence dishonors our Rainbow Nation and the sacrifices of our freedom fighters.”

The President’s remarks come amid a surge in anti-immigrant sentiment, fueled by economic hardships and job scarcity. Reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS) indicate over 50 arrests in the past week related to looting and assaults on foreign-owned businesses. Human Rights Watch has called for swift intervention, warning of a humanitarian crisis.

Ramaphosa emphasized government action: “We are deploying additional resources to hotspots, fast-tracking integration programs, and reviewing immigration policies to balance security with humanity.” He appealed to community leaders, faith groups, and influencers to promote peace, invoking ubuntu – the African philosophy of shared humanity.

Christian leaders, including the South African Council of Churches, welcomed the statement, linking it to biblical calls for welcoming the stranger (Hebrews 13:2). “True patriotism builds bridges, not barriers,” said Archbishop Thabo Makgoba.

As tensions simmer, Ramaphosa’s words signal a firm stance: South Africa must reject division. Citizens are urged to report violence via SAPS hotlines. Stay tuned for updates
