, Limpopo – A driver escaped with minor injuries after his bakkie overturned on the treacherous R40 road in Casteel early this morning, amid ongoing challenges from recent heavy flooding in the area.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene around 3:00 AM following reports of a single-vehicle accident. The driver, a local man in his 40s whose identity has not yet been released, lost control of his white Toyota bakkie while navigating a sharp bend near the Casteel turn-off. Eyewitnesses described how the vehicle veered off the road, flipped onto its side, and came to rest in a ditch filled with mud and runoff water.
Paramedics from Limpopo’s Department of Health treated the driver on-site for minor cuts, bruises, and possible whiplash. He was stabilized and transported to nearby Tzaneen Hospital for further checks. No other vehicles or passengers were involved, averting a potentially more tragic outcome.
The R40, a vital artery linking Tzaneen to Hoedspruit and beyond, has been plagued by flooding over the past week due to relentless rains linked to a lingering low-pressure system. Provincial authorities report that sections of the road remain slick with standing water, loose gravel, and scattered debris, including fallen branches and eroded earth banks.
Limpopo Traffic Police spokesperson Constable Sarah Mkhize urged motorists to exercise extreme caution. “The road surface is highly unstable. Reduce speed, increase following distances, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible,” she warned. Temporary speed restrictions and warning signs have been erected, but drivers are advised to check real-time updates via the Limpopo Roads Agency app or local radio.
This incident underscores the broader impact of the floods, which have already caused multiple closures and disruptions across the Waterberg and Mopani districts. As cleanup efforts continue, communities are reminded to heed weather alerts from the South African Weather Service.
Local resident Thabo Nkosi, who passed the scene shortly after, praised the quick response: “Our emergency teams are lifesavers in these conditions.”
