MALAMULELE – A festive Christmas Eve in Shigamani village, Limpopo, descended into horror when a 31-year-old man allegedly stabbed his 35-year-old brother to death following a heated family argument. The suspect appeared in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing a murder charge that has shocked the close-knit rural community.
The victim, who had just returned home from Gauteng for the holidays, reignited tensions with his younger sibling upon arrival. Eyewitnesses reported that what began as a verbal dispute escalated rapidly around 8 PM. In a fit of rage, the suspect grabbed a knife and inflicted fatal wounds on his brother’s upper body. The injured man was rushed to a nearby clinic but succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the tragic sequence of events. “The brothers were engaged in a domestic altercation when the suspect allegedly stabbed the deceased multiple times. He fled the scene but was swiftly apprehended in the nearby Mphambo village,” Ledwaba stated. No motive has been publicly disclosed, though preliminary investigations point to a long-simmering family grudge possibly fueled by the victim’s time away in Johannesburg.
The court remanded the 31-year-old in custody without bail, with the case postponed to January 10 for further investigation, including a post-mortem report. Community leaders in Shigamani expressed grief, urging families to seek mediation during holiday reunions. “Christmas is for peace, not violence. This loss reminds us to forgive and talk things out,” said local elder Thoko Makhubele.
As Limpopo mourns, the incident underscores rising domestic violence cases in rural areas, with SAPS calling for public vigilance.
