Cape Town – In a stunning revelation at the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria on Monday, Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo presented WhatsApp messages that allegedly link payments to the African National Congress (ANC) through a close associate of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. The messages implicate Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala, described as a cartel member, in facilitating these “dirty payments.”

According to Khumalo, Matlala was instrumental in moving funds to the ANC, with some payments earmarked for ANC events. The transactions appeared to benefit delegates with close ties to Minister Mchunu, mediated by his chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde. This connection raises serious questions about the potential misuse of political influence for financial gain within the crime and political nexus.

The WhatsApp communications, detailed during the inquiry, outline a complex network of intermediaries and recipients, suggesting that these payments were not isolated incidents but part of an ongoing system. The inquiry aims to uncover the extent of this scheme and whether senior ANC figures, including those linked to the Police Ministry, played an active role.

This revelation adds to the growing concerns over corruption and cartel involvement in public and political institutions in South Africa. It highlights how illicit networks can infiltrate and influence political processes, undermining public trust in governance.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and his office have yet to respond officially to the allegations. The Madlanga Commission continues its probe into the intersection of crime intelligence, political funding, and corruption, seeking to bring accountability and transparency to these troubling allegations.

As the commission progresses, South Africans await further disclosures that may shed light on how deep the alleged corruption runs and what impact it could have on the ANC and law enforcement agencies.
