Many students eager to pursue their studies in 2025 have been waiting for the opening of the NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) applications. The wait is over, as NSFAS has officially announced that applications will open on Monday, September 2, 2024.

NSFAS is crucial in providing comprehensive funding to over one million students enrolled in approved programs at public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges
The bursaries offered by NSFAS cover various educational expenses, including tuition and registration fees, as well as allowances for accommodation, meals, and stationery. For students living at home, a transport allowance is provided instead of accommodation funding, while those in catered accommodation will not receive a meal allowance.
The timing of the application period aligns with the completion of the SARS tax period, ensuring that updated information is available for efficient processing. NSFAS encourages all eligible students to apply within the designated timeframe and reminds grade 12 learners that they do not need their matric results to apply. In a bid to enhance the application process, NSFAS is collaborating with the Department of Basic Education to improve verification procedures, particularly regarding parental relationships.

This initiative aims to ensure timely confirmation of funding decisions. Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr. Nobuhle Nkabane, has confirmed that NSFAS is preparing its systems to handle the anticipated influx of applications, as last year saw nearly 2 million applications, including both returning and first-time students. For those whose applications are rejected, NSFAS has established an appeals process, requiring specific documents depending on the reason for rejection. Additionally, a new mobile application will be launched to facilitate the application process, initially available on iOS and Android platforms, with biometric capabilities to be introduced later.
Eligible applicants include South African citizens, SASSA grant recipients, and those whose combined household income does not exceed R350,000 per year (or R600,000 for applicants with disabilities). Students are encouraged to share this information with peers to ensure that as many eligible candidates as possible can access the funding necessary for their education.
