On Monday, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the mayor of Zululand District Municipality, asked for a national plan to limit the number of trucks that go through Zululand.
“The number of trucks that pass along the R34 from Vryheid to Richards Bay and the N2 from oPhongolo to Richards Bay every hour is just too much for the roads to handle. “Our road system is under a lot of stress, and as a result, people are dying in car accidents every day,” Buthelezi said.
“We want the Minister of Transport to come up with a national plan to deal with these trucks as soon as possible,” he said. “Part of that plan should be that they can only drive between 6 pm and 6 am.”
Buthelezi also told all the families who lost loved ones in this accident that he was sorry.
He asked his city officials to help the families of the deceased during this hard time.
On Monday afternoon, KZN acting premier Nomagugu Simelane said that the government will soon meet with the SA National Roads Agency Limited to talk about expanding the N2 Pongola strip. He said this after visiting the scene of the Pongola crash and talking with families and schools that were affected.

“Extending the road is a big job that could take years to finish. Immediate actions would be to put up speed bumps and increase law enforcement by working with the Provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate and local traffic officers. ” MEC Hlomuka will be meeting with Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula this week, and we will put this issue on the agenda.
We can’t just sit back and do nothing while the trucks in Pongola scare the people who live there and other people who use the roads. Simelane said, “We will also meet with truck companies to tell them how to deal with their drivers who are rude to other drivers.”
